The Bell Cup – the Thorpeness Junior Open was played in bright sunshine on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May 2018. With a large field of 58 players from Norfolk Suffolk Essex and Cambridgeshire, playing in temperatures which reached the mid 20’s, despite the sea breeze, the day was enjoyed by players and their families, and some excellent golf was achieved.
The course was in fine condition, with fast greens and dry fairways causing the ball to run, but not always in the right direction! The gorse and the bunkers were very busy!
47 players played in the medal competition, and the winner of the Bell Cup – Gross Competition, was Liam Cossey from Royal Norwich. Playing off 1, Liam achieved a gross score of 74, with two players from Ely City, Alfie Guy-Pinkney and George Whitehall coming 2nd and 3rd, both with gross 75, playing off 4.
The nett competition was won by Chloe Dixon (hcp 21) from Ufford Park with a nett 68, winning on countback from Tyler Weaver (hcp) from Bury St Edmunds. Mary Cuthbert from Thorpeness (hcp 12) won the Girls prize with nett 74
In order to try and encourage high handicaps to play the course, there was a Stableford Competition featuring handicaps from 26 to 40, which was won by Juliette Coffey from Woodbridge with a magnificent 53 points.
It was a wonderful day, and so lovely to see so many youngsters enjoying their golf, and achieving such a great result.
