The Meare

The third hole at this Suffolk golf club is just yards away from Thorpeness Meare, a manmade boating lake where Scottish author J.M Barrie was inspired to write his famous story ‘Peter Pan.’

The tale of a boy who never grows old and his adventures in Never-Never Land, fighting Captain Hook, pirates and a crocodile that swallowed a clock, is world famous.

Lay on the lawn with a picnic or bar snack, have a game of croquet or read a book on the bench by the Meare. Our garden is the best place in Thorpeness to unwind after a day’s activities in and around the hotel.

In summer our Meare gardens open for dining. While away an afternoon in a beautiful lakeside spot, watching the rowing boats and wildlife pass by.

Its tranquil setting makes eating out in Thorpeness a real pleasure. Choose from a selection of beverages, light snacks and delicious meals from our Bar Menu.

You might catch a bride and groom having their photographs taken in our garden in the summer, whether their reception takes place in the Lakeside Suite at the hotel or at our Country Club by the beach.

On Regatta night in August, we invite you to join us for Pimms and a Barbeque whilst we watch the fireworks display and illuminated boat parade on the Meare in the evening.
